The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), and Mandate Health Empowerment Initiative (MHEI) invite applications from youths as advisors to form a Youth Advisory Council (YAC) in a research study on NEETs (youth who are not in employment, education, or training).
YEAC-Nigeria and MHEI are partnering with university researchers locally and internationally for a study to understand what helps young people who are not in employment, education, or training (we call them NEETs) and who live in stressed communities (e.g., communities that are poor, polluted, or violent) to be okay. In the research study, being okay means NEETs report no or few symptoms of depression.
To do this research study well, we need the help of young people who can advise us and the researchers.
Being an advisor means the youths will help the research team understand what helps NEETs to be okay in their community, help the team find other NEETs to participate in the study, help the research team to work ethically, check that the research activities can work with NEETs in their community, and help the team share what they learn from the study with people who are interested in supporting youths to cope well when life is hard.
The youth advisors will do these by meeting with members of the research team four (4) times a year for at least three years in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, with all expenses and sitting allowances paid by YEAC-Nigeria and partners.
In this phase of the study activity, ten (10) young people who have experienced being NEETs, challenged by economic, environmental, or social risks (e.g., poverty, pollution, or violence), committed to supporting the wellbeing of local youth, and/or have positive youth leadership qualities, understand the English language, can read and write, male and female, and are between the ages of 18 and 24 years old, from any community in both Rivers and Bayelsa States, are needed for appointment as advisors to form the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and would also have the opportunity to meet and interact with NEETs and partners from other parts of the world during the course of the study.
Interested persons who wish to be a part of the study as advisors, or if you know someone who fits into this category and can serve as an advisor, should send their name, age, sex, phone number or contact number, email (if available), name of the community, LGA, and state of origin to 08184442989.
Note that, as expected, over 10 applications would be received, and those not selected into the YAC would be kept in view to be a part of the 600 NEETs that we would be recruiting in the near future from both Rivers and Bayelsa States to be part of the research study.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
Shortlisted youths would be contacted, interviewed, and inaugurated into the Youth Advisory Council (YAC).
