On Tuesday, June 22, Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC) was invited by EGBEMO-ANGALABIRI Community in Bayelsa State to join National Oil Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Shell, Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment, Security Operatives, Community Leaders, Youths leaders, etc for Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to oil spill site in the community and join to determine the cause of the spillage. Advocacy Centre has earlier reported of the spillage in the company read able hereThe official JIV report is not yet out as it was not signed at the site as supposed because of conflicting resolution and disagreements among parties about the cause of the spillage. The spill site is said to have been tempered with after the spill occurred to manipulate evidence.
However, majority including NOSDRA are concluding and saying it is equipment failure except the representative of DPR arguing that it is third party interference. On June 21, 2021, Advocacy Centre received call from the community that Shell staff were at the spillage site alone and they suspected that they were tempering with evidences ahead of the JIV scheduled for June 22. When the call came to the Executive Director of ADVOCACY CENTRE, Fyneface Dumnamene from the community, YEAC was publishing the oil spill incident report on its website and this allegation of alleged Shell Nicodemus visit to the site ahead of JIV was captured and mentioned in the publication onlineYEAC is thus not surprised to hear of the alleged tempering with evidences at the spill site as observed, leading to disagreements among parties as reported by Advocacy Centre’s team to the spillage site with others for the JIV. The JIV was thus INCONCLUSIVE as parties could not agree among themselves.
