Since November 1, 2021, there has been ongoing oil spills in Nembe area of Bayelsa Delta. The company responsible, AITEO has as at the date of this report not been able to stop or contain the spills. Reports has it that the company is seeking international assistance to be able to stop the spill. It has also distributed some relief materials even while still trying to blame the spill on third party interference without Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) report. The spill is said to have overpowered the boom put in place and meant to prevent spread and spread to many costal communities up to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and negatively impacting communities, water bodies, fauna and flora as can also be seen in a video by GuardianTV. The Bayelsa State Advocacy Officer of Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC), Philip Godfrey who visited the area and impacted communities on the same day the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylver landed with helicopter on the orders of Mr. President said as at November 24, the spill was still ongoing nonstop from the spill point in the OML 29.
In an earlier press statements realized on the spill by Advocacy Centre and published by The Tide Newspaper, SweetCrude Reportetc., the organization pick holes in the way the spill has been managed to date. Advocacy Centre is taking further advocacy steps, working with the community leaders and the media to call attention to the spills with a view of ensuring that it is stopped, cleaned up and compensation paid to the local communities beyond few bags of rice and other items in the name of “relief materials”.
