YEAC Creates Awareness on Climate Change, Impacts and Mitigation Mechanisms in Grassroots Communities in the Niger Delta

Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) on August 30 and 31st organized “Climate Change Awareness and Impact Mitigation Mechanisms in Grassroots Communities in the Niger Delta” programme in the Ogoni area of Rivers State in collaboration and support from XR Catalysers, United Kingdom.

The event which held in Tai Local Government area of Rivers State had over 45 participants from grassroots communities in Khana, Gokana, Tai and in the two day’s event.

The event started with a session that had participants respond to some structured questions on an 8-page questionnaire on climate climate change that tests their knowledge and understanding of Climate Change, its causes, impacts and mitigation mechanisms.

With With participants’ knowledge of the subject matter tested and the gap in their knowledge on climate change identified and exposed, a projected PowerPoint presentation on “Climate Change Awareness and Impact Mitigation Mechanisms in Grassroots Communities in the Niger Delta” was presented by the Executive Director, Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface and participants sensitized.

Participants were sensitized using various sub-thematic concepts including climate change, global warming, how global warming drives climate change, climate connections, causes of global warming, the most important greenhouse gases that causes climate change, the black carbon and how it causes climate change and visuals of impact of climate change.

Other areas covered in the sensitization also include impacts of climate change, impacts of climate change on human health and climate change mitigation mechanisms such as Speaking up (advocacy), using renewable energy, switching to heat pump, use of electric cars, conserving energy, stopping artisanal refining activities that contributes to climate change, conserving water, helping to conserve and restore forests, advocate for stopping deforestation, minimizing use of synthetic fertilizers, reducing food waste and calling for Nigeria’s less dependent on fossil fuel, holistic implementation of Climate Change Act 2021 and Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan launched on August 25, 2022 by Vice Prof. President Yemi Osibanjo can help mitigate climate change in Nigeria.

At the end of the sensitization on each day, participants commented, shared their experiences and contributed to the discussion. Some participants call for training of youths to acquire skills that would enable them produce energy-efficient products and materials locally; inclusion of climate change in school curriculum at all levels, provision of alternative livelihood opportunities for youths involved in artisanal refining activities, women inclusion in the climate change and just energy transition discussion, etc.
